Windows Vista
Compared with predecessors (Windows 2000,
Windows XP, etc.) Vista offers a more advanced,
feature packed and secure environment which
applies to both home and business users. A full
feature list can be found at
We have outlined a few unique features which
really differentiate Windows Vista:
Interactive Environment:
- Organise a lifetime of photos and home
movies with ease using the new and improved
Windows Photo Gallery, offering a variety of
categorisation and labelling features you can be
sure to find what you want, when you want it.
- Windows Media Centre allows you to turn your
PC into a super-powered TV set. Connect your
Aerial input to your desktop or laptop and use a
compatible remote control to watch live TV with
the flexibility of pausing action so you never
miss a moment.
- Windows Media Centre brings together all
your favourite consumer electronic devices such
as TV, stereo, digital video recorder (DVR),
gaming devices and personal computer into one
complete package offering seamless transition
between devices, making Windows Vista the
perfect entertainment solution.
- Windows Media Centre allows you to watch
your favourite television programs according to
your schedule. Using a compatible remote control
you are able to see, find, schedule and record
live TV, and watch your programs when you have
the time, so that you don’t miss a single
episode!
Boosting Performance
- Windows Vista introduces a new technology
called Superfetch which helps improve PC
responsiveness and creates more consistent
system performance by tracking applications
which are used often and pre-loading them into
memory for quick access.
- Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost,
a new concept in adding memory to a PC. You can
use a non-volatile flash memory, such as a USB
“pen drive” to improve performance without the
headache of installing additional memory into
your computer which can be time consuming and
costly.
- The USB flash device serves as an
additional memory cache which the computer can
access much quicker than data on a hard drive.
Windows ReadyBoost coupled with Windows
SuperFetch can significantly improve system
responsiveness.
- Windows Vista introduces a new power state
called Sleep. Sleep, combines both Standby and
Hibernate power states offering more
flexibility, security and lower power
consumption. Furthermore the new Sleep power
state enables you to use your computer whenever
you want, without having to wait for the
computer to boot up. Sleep state is not only
power efficient but it saves your work session
ready for you within seconds.
- Windows Internet Explorer 7 offers a Tabbed
window approach making it easier to manage and
simultaneously browse multiple pages in one
window.
Improved Security
- Windows Vista provides better protection for
your PC, personal information and your family
than any of its predecessors, with the
introduction of Windows Defender, anti-spam and
phishing filters coupled with Parental Controls,
you can be sure your Windows experience is in
good hands.
- Windows Internet Explorer 7 protects
personal identity and safe-guards your computer
from security threats and slow performance by
proactively scanning your PC using
anti-phishing, spyware and virus scanners.
Furthermore Windows Vista alerts you when
potentially dangerous software is trying to run
on your computer and helps keep your PC running
smoothly.
- Windows Vista introduces User Account
Control (UAC) feature to reduce the exposure and
attack surface of the operating system by
requiring that all users run in standard user
privileges on a PC.
Improved Interface & Experience

Windows Vista offers two discrete user
interfaces, the basic version, which is offered
with entry level systems and Windows Aero which
is the best-designed, highest-performing
Microsoft user interface to date. Both offer a
new and improved user experience that makes it
easier to visualize and work with your
information whilst allowing for a smoother, more
stable desktop experience.
Windows Aero Interface
Windows Aero is available to PCs using a
compatible graphics card and running the Home
Premium, Business, Ultimate or Enterprise
editions of Windows Vista.
Windows Aero offers a whole host of new features
which sets Aero apart from previous Windows
interfaces. Immediately noticeable is the new
translucent effect on the Start menu and windows
borders described as “glass” which enhances
comfort and simplicity and conveys a sense of
lightweight openness that frees you to focus on
content rather than environment.
Windows Aero introduces dynamic windows which
when a window is minimised it smoothly animates
to its place on the taskbar making it easier to
locate when you next require it. Furthermore
Windows Aero offers live taskbar thumbnails of
the windows that are currently open in your
taskbar. When you move your mouse over a
particular window tile on the taskbar you will
be presented with a live thumbnail of the page
without having to bring it to the foreground.
Windows Flip is an update of the feature known
as ALT+TAB in previous versions of Windows.
Windows flip shows you live thumbnails of your
open windows instead of generic icons making it
easier to identify the window you are looking
for, it even lets you instantly minimise all the
windows on your desktop.
Windows Flip 3D offers a unique approach to
finding the window you want, by holding Start +
TAB, Windows Flip 3D dynamically displays all
the open windows on your desktop in a 3
dimensional stack. In this view you are able to
rotate through your open windows to find the one
you’re after. In addition you can utilise the
scroll wheel on your mouse to smoothly flip
through to the window you require.
You also get a much smoother window performance
with Aero, open windows glide smoothly on the
screen when moved or resized. There is none of
the redraw artefacts, latency, or tearing
effects that you may encounter in earlier
versions.
